Reusable Swim Diapers Versus Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diaper Q&A

Question: We’re going to be doing a lot of swimming this summer; do we need to use special swim diapers? Answers: Yes and no. We sell a small variety of reusable swim diapers that are designed just for swimming. These diapers are essentially covers with a thin mesh lining on the inside, much like the inside of a bathing suit. Most swim diapers have a tough exterior shell that doesn’t scratch easily and will take a little more abuse than a regular diaper cover or shell. While regular diaper covers and shells can be used for swimming (you should always check your manufacturers recommendations first), remember your baby will be scooting and sitting around on concrete, sand, rocks, and shells depending on where you are swimming. These can all scratch the outside of your favorite diaper cover. The concentration of chlorine in most pools isn’t enough to damage a regular diaper cover or shell. When using a diaper cover or shell remove the inserts so it doesn’t weigh your baby down in the water. Swim diapers (both disposable and reusable) are only intended to keep the solids (poop) contained.
