Baby it’s hot outside! When the summer heat is beating down on your and your family one way to beat the heat is by splashing around in the pool, at the beach, or by running in a sprinkler! But don’t forget to protect your little ones delicate skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Did you know that even one sunburn in childhood can double your risks of developing skin cancer as an adult? That’s a pretty scary thought for any parent but don’t fear because there are some simple steps you can take to prevent sun damage.
- Cover Up! Put on a hat, rash guard, long sleeves, and sunglasses when your little one is playing outdoors.
- Love the Shade! Find a picnic table in the shade, pack a beach umbrella, or sun canopy and let our kids hang out in the shade while they play.
- Avoid the mid-day sun! The sun is the strongest in the middle of the day so plan to go earlier or later in the day when the sun is lower.
- Apply a safe sunscreen on children over 6 months of age. Safe sunscreens should NOT contain Vitamin A, oxybenzone, or bug repellents. Instead look for mineral based sunscreens with active ingredients like zinc, titanium, or avobenzone.
For more tips on how to keep your kids safe this summer visit the Environmental Working Groups (EWG), Sunscreen Guide 2012. You can also download their Sunscreen 2012 app (free) on your phone to help you choose a safe sunscreen while at the store.
This year we began to carry the Episencial Sunny Sunscreen which receives an overall score of 2 (Good) by the EWG. Some of the key ingredients include titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, water, and other plant based ingredients. It goes on smooth without leaving the nasty white residue that some mineral sunscreens can leave.
