Understanding Ammonia and Cloth Diapers

Understanding Ammonia and Cloth Diapers
Ammonia Woes and What To Do When Your Nose Burns   People often ask, "How do I know if it's ammonia?"  and the answer is, if you don't KNOW it's ammonia, it most likely isn't.  When your diapers smell like ammonia, you'll know it.  There's not a way to describe the smell unless you've smelled it.  It burns your nose.  In diapers, you'll often smell this when the diapers have sat for a while- you may get a whiff in the overnight diaper, or smell it at the bottom of your diaper pail when you dump the diapers in the washer.  Ammonia builds up over time. Want a full lesson in how ammonia and urine react?  Rockin' Green Soap has a great article called "Why do overnight diapers stink?" that you should...

Featured Product Review: ones&twos AIO one-size cloth diaper

We're heard so many wonderful reviews of the new ones&twos all-in-one (AIO) one-size cloth diaper we thought we would share some of the details with you. We've had a chance to try them on our own team of babies and toddlers and we are loving this little diaper.  Currently our team has tested the ones&twos on Parker (11lb, 23", and 2.5 month old daughter of Jill - our shipping manager), Bailey (25lb and 3 yr old daughter of Calley - that's me), and also on Stacy's (our Facebook guru) toddler as well (roughly the same age/weight as my daughter). Jill told me:  "We really love our ones&twos!  It has a great trim fit for my skinny little peanut. Easy to prep and easy to clean. I can just throw...

How Do You Adjust a FuzziBunz Elite One-Size for a Proper Fit?

If you're a cloth diapering fan, chances are you've discovered that the FuzziBunz Elite One-Size Cloth Diaper is a little different than the pack. Whereas most one-size diapers are adjusted with a maze of snaps on the front of the diaper, FuzziBunz One-Size Cloth Diapers are adjusted with a hidden adjustable elastic band. Let me explain. Most of you are probably familiar with adjustable waist pants. Most kids pants and jeans come with adjustable waist elastic today. FuzziBunz has taken this innovation to the next level by using it inside of the diaper. You can adjust your baby's diaper before you even put it on him! Waist Adjustment: The first point of adjustment is in the waist band, which is located inside of...

Tips From a Prepping Cheater

Tips From a Prepping Cheater: Most manufacturers recommend washing the hemp inserts, prefolds, and flats 5 times before use.  That uses a lot of water, and takes quite a bit of time.  I usually boil these items for 20 minutes, and then remove to a waiting bowl with tongs, and then dump in the washer and wash once on hot with detergent.  Brands like Cotton Babies don't recommend boiling their fabrics as it causes them to break down more quickly, but my personal opinion is that boiling them isn't much harder on them than the 4 washes the boiling replaces, so this is what I do.  It draws those natural oils out quickly.  DON'T boil anything with elastic or waterproof fabric, though! Also, if you receive a few...

Cloth Diapering 101: How to Prep Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diapering 101: How to Prep Cloth Diapers
Cloth Diapering 101:  Prepping your diapers: Congratulations!  You've decided to try cloth diapering.  You've made your first purchase but now what?  Should you wash your diapers before putting them on your baby or are the ready to use?   Most manufacturers include washing and prepping directions with their packaging or on the inside of the tags so be sure to read their recommendations first.  Each brand may vary slightly in their recommendations. Why should you prep your diapers?  1) To remove any residual debris, dust, chemicals that might be on your diapers from manufacturing and shipping, and 2) for the diaper to become fully absorbent. Some fabrics actually become more absorbent the more times...

Introducing the Hiney Lineys Versa System

We're ringing in the New Year with a new product at DiaperShops.com, the Hiney Lineys Versa Cloth Diapering System. In a recent interview with Shelia from Hiney Lineys we asked; What makes Hiney Lineys different from other systems?  And why is it a much needed system that fills a gap in the diaper market?  Here is what she had to say about her system: When my daughter was 8 mos old, I started experimenting with different diapers because she was dealing with eczema.  I felt like she needed a stay dry layer to help with the eczema.  I started using pocket diapers, but I didn’t like that I couldn’t reuse anything and had to wash the whole thing each time.  This is where Hiney Lineys was born!  I wanted...

The Lifespan of Cloth Diapers

The Lifespan of Cloth Diapers While researching an investment in cloth diapers, it makes sense to think about just how long you can plan on keeping your diapers around.  In general, it’s good news:  If cloth diapers are well taken care of, they will typically last three years or more and usually through multiple children.  Of course, the lifespan of any given diaper depends a lot on how much wear and tear it receives. To extend the life of cloth diapers, limiting the wear as much as possible is important.  A few tips for making diapers last:  Rotating:  Make sure you have enough diapers to rotate the stash frequently.  Obviously the more often each diaper is worn and washed, the more signs of wear...
